Three Major Misunderstandings About Christianity

The Christian life is one filled with both freedom and discipline. It carries a heavy toll, but also an awesome prize. There are many who travel this road, but there are also many who veer off its path. There are also so many who misunderstand Christianity. So last Sunday, we learned about three of some of the main misunderstandings there are of Christianity, and uncover the truth, based on the passage from John 10:1-21.

Christianity is not about restrictions (v1-10)

I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture.  (John 10:9)

Many times, people think that Christianity is about following a set of rules. That by observing and obeying these rules, they miss out on the “fun" things in life. Moreover, it is often thought of as a religion that restricts one's freedom and forces a person to live a certain way of life and restricts the choices they can make.

However, this is untrue, as Jesus identifies himself as the gate, and everyone who comes through Him, will be saved and, in turn, will have true freedom. The things we do as Christians is a response to being obedient to God and experiencing life to the full. Living a cavalier life means being a slave to sin.

Christianity is not about earning God’s approval (v11-15)

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11)

There are also many who believe that Christians obey God in order to earn God’s approval. That they need to work and strive with all their might in doing good things—such as offering, praying and reading the Bible—in the hope that they will be accepted by God.

However, Christianity, is not about earning the approval of God. The fact that Jesus would lay down His life for us—even while we were sinners (Romans 5:8)—makes us valuable in God’s eyes. And in turn, frees us from earning God’s approval allowing us to obey out of a heart of love and gratitude.

Christianity is not about being exclusive (v16-21)

I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. (John 10:16)

When we look at how Jesus spent His time on earth, and who He spent His time with; we see that He often surrounded the outcasts and marginalised. People like the tax collectors, the sick, the blind, the sinners. We see in these verses that Jesus doesn’t just spend His time with His own people, but with those of all various backgrounds and upbringing.

Christianity is therefore, not about being exclusive, but about treating others with selfless love, the same kind of love we first received from Christ.

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some misunderstandings about Christianity that you heard of before?

  2. Have you ever received criticism for any of these misunderstandings?

  3. Has there ever been any opportunities where you were able to clear up some misunderstandings about Christianity? If so, what were the results?

Dear Jesus,

Thank you for loving us and laying down your life for us.

Help us to share the same selfless love with others, so that they too, may know the true gospel.

In Jesus’ name we pray,
Amen
