How to overcome difficulties

As the Philippians knew, we must face difficulties in life and we’re often stumped on how to overcome them. Paul himself was facing many difficulties while writing the letter to the Philippians—he was imprisoned and facing imminent death. And yet, Paul shared an encouraging word to the church. Words that continue to encourage us to this day when faced with difficulties. This is what Paul says.

1. Be joyful in the Lord (Phil 4:4-5a)

The Philippians themselves were quite stressed at the time in which they received Paul’s letter. They faced much suffering at the hands of the society around them, who protested at their religion. But, in the face of suffering—particularly suffering for the Lord’s sake—Paul encouraged them all the more to find joy. It’s joy in Jesus that is far greater than any difficulties we may face in this life. Christians who can boldly ‘rejoice in the Lord always’ (verse 4) can overcome everything and anything in this life. How do we find joy in Jesus? We must first find joy in the Good News of the gospel.

2. Be prayerful in the Lord (Phil 5b-7)

Paul encouraged the Philippians by advising that the ‘Lord is near’. There are two possible meanings for this translation: the Holy Spirit is close to us or that Jesus’ second coming is near. Regardless, God’s nearness means that we ‘do not [need to] be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.’ (verse 6). Whether it be prayer, petition, or submitting our requests, we do these things as a powerful way to worry less and trust in God more. Prayer is also a means for humbling ourselves before God, entrusting that he is listening and that he can answer our prayers. And it is then that a peace that transcends all understanding—the peace of God—will protect our hearts and minds, keeping them focused on Christ. So, why should we worry about our difficulties, when we can do something more worthwhile and effective than that? We must pray.

Dear God,

Thank you for your nearness, through your Spirit that lives within us, and through Christ who has promised to return and restore us. I pray that in any of life’s difficulties, would you inspire within me, a well of joy? Would you remind me to be all the more prayerful as the day approaches?

In Jesus’ name I pray,
Amen
